Thanks to a record-tying seven no-hitters during the 2012 season, Major League Baseball fans are crazy about the pitching achievement.
So much so, Domino's pizza and MLB.TV teamed up for their "DomiNoNo" promotion.
"The no-hitter is one of sports' greatest achievements," said Domino's spokesperson Chris Brandon. "Domino's is thrilled to reward baseball fans with free pizza the day after each of the first two no-hitters of the 2013 season."
On Friday night, fans almost got their free pizza as Detroit Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez carried a no-no into the ninth inning against the Minnesota Twins. Enter Joe Mauer…professional buzzkill.
On May 6, 2008, the catcher spoiled Chicago White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd's no-hitter with a double. Two years later, on August 23, 2010, reigning 2009 American League MVP singled off Texas Rangers closer Neftali Feliz. And then, of course, this most recent effort, breaking up Sanchez's attempt for a second no-hitter.
All three instances, Mauer broke up a no-hitters with one out in the ninth inning. Incidentally, his hit also ended up being the only hit for the Twins.
