Yikes.
Pitching great Curt Schilling announced Wednesday he has been diagnosed with cancer.
“I’ve always believed life is about embracing the gifts and rising up to meet the challenges,” Schilling said in a statement to ESPN. “We’ve been presented with another challenge, as I’ve recently been diagnosed with cancer.”
The six-time All-Star didn't elaborate as to what kind of cancer and there's no word yet as to how (or if) this diagnosis will affect his gig with ESPN this upcoming baseball season.
“Our thoughts are with Curt and his family during this challenging time,” an ESPN statement read. “His ESPN teammates wish him continued strength in his cancer fight and we look forward to welcoming him back to our baseball coverage whenever he’s ready.”
Schilling pitched for five teams during his 20-year Major League career…collecting three World Series rings along the way. He compiled 216 wins and 3116 strikeouts to go along with his 3.46 ERA. In January, after appearing on his second Hall of Fame ballot, he received 29.2% of the vote.
