Greetings all – time again for the week in review.
Starting off with the Falcons as we always do – the Birds opened the week in Manchester where the Falcons let the Monarchs roar out to a 3-0 lead before Dominic Monardo scored off a rebound 44 seconds after the Monarchs third goal. Late in the second, Mike Hoeffel scored to make it 4-2. Oscar Dansk made 25 saves in the loss.
Up next against Providence, the Falcons again fell behind early before Thomas Larkin tied it with a blast off a faceoff win. The game went to overtime, and a second overtime as well taking the play on ice to a three on three when Marko Dano drove to the net and Malcolm Subban stopped him, but Dana Tyrell picked up the rebound for the game winner. Scott Munroe stopped 14 of 15 in the victory.
To close out the week, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms came to town and again the Falcons put themselves in a 1-0 hole before Monardo deflected a Brett Ponich point shot to tie it before the Phantoms scored two straight. TJ Tynan started the comeback combining for probably the shortest goal possible as the 5’8 Tynan got help from 5’11 Dano and 5’9 Mike Little. After a Zach Stortini goal, and a beauty of a fight by Mathieu Gagnon in the second, Luke Adam made it 4-3 in the third when he gathered a loose puck and sniped it past Rob Zepp. Later in the third, Yann Sauve got the puck to Sean Collins who found Jamie Sifers who scored on a one timer to tie the game at four. Sadly the Falcons fell in overtime. In the loss, Oscar Dansk stopped 18 of 23.
Blake Siebenaler-Niagara IceDogs (OHL) Season Stats 54GP 11-20-31 +3 19PIM Blake opened the week with back to back efforts without a point against Mississauga and Sarnia before picking up his seventh multipoint game of the season. In Josh Ho-Sang’s return to Windsor, Blake got the Dogs on the board when Ho-Sang skated towards the blueline and got the puck to Blake who skated in all alone and fired a shot over the Windsor goalie’s shoulder. Late in the third period, Blake must have got the puck to Ho-Sang who set up behind the Spits net and almost challenged them to go back there. Ultimately, he found Carter Verhage who skated through the slot and scored his 26th of the year to make it 3-1. The goal and an assist gave Blake a new career high for points in a season, beating his total from last year.
Nick Moutrey-North Bay Battalion (OHL) Season Stats 46GP 16-33-49 +15 44PIM Nick and the Troops opened up the week in Sudbury against the Wolves. In the 3-2 loss, Nick picked up an assist on both Battalion goals. On the first goal, it’s hard to really see Nick’s assist but he started the play on the Troops’ second goal. Late in the third, Nick drove into the zone and dropped the puck to Nick Paul who fired a shot that Nick got a whack at it before Kyle Wood finished it off.
Next up it was back home for a game with the London Knights. Nick helped open the scoring when he took a crossrink pass and fired a shot that was stopped but Brenden Miller finished it to make it 1-0. Later in the game with North Bay leading 3-1, Nick passed the puck to Ryan Kujawinski who skated the length of the ice and fired to make it 4-1 in a 5-2 Battalion win. Nick had his three game point streak snapped in a 5-2 win over Sudbury.
Sonny Milano-Plymouth Whalers (OHL) Season Stats 36GP 15-35-50 -13 14PIM Sonny opened the week with his 15th multipoint game of the season by scoring a goal and an assist in a 5-1 win over Saginaw. This gives him 50 points on the season. Sonny closed out the week by going without a point for two straight games tying a season high for games without a point.
Markus Soberg-Windsor Spitfires (OHL) Season Stats 48GP 11-15-26 -5 20PIM A light week for Markus and the Spits – they had only two games this week. Opening up against Kitchener, Markus got the Spits on the board just minutes after the Rangers struck. Rangers’ goalie Jake Paterson tried to play the puck but Slater Doggett got to it first and found Markus in front who had almost an empty net to score into to make it 1-1 in a 4-1 Spitfires win. Markus was held without a point in a 3-1 loss to Niagara.
Olivier LeBlanc-Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (QMJHL) Season Stats 47GP 4-23-27 +22 73PIM Olivier was held pointless in the Eagles first two games last week before picking up an assist on Marcus Hinds’ goal in a 3-1 loss to Halifax on Hockey Day in Canada.
Julien Pelletier-Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL) Season Stats 40GP 9-14-23 -19 28PIM Julien opened the week by scoring a goal and an assist in a 5-3 victory over Drummondville. In the Huskies next game, Julien got the team on the board 59 seconds after Phoenix got on the board. Julien closed out the week going without a point against Rimouski.
Peter Quenneville-Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL) Season Stats 57GP 17-37-54 +13 18PIM Another team with a light week as the Kings only had two games last week. Peter opened the scoring in a 5-4 overtime loss to Spokane which snapped a six game winning streak for the Kings. Midway through the first with the Kings on the power play, Peter went back and forth with Nolan Patrick before Peter finished with a one timer from the circle to make it 1-0. Next up it was the Prince Albert Raiders coming to town. In the 5-2 Wheat Kings win, Peter again helped with the opening goal by picking up an assist on Duncan Campbell’s first goal of the game. Later, Peter would finish the scoring with an empty net goal.
Oliver Bjorkstrand-Portland Winterhawks (WHL) Season Stats 43GP 39-35-74 ++37 25PIM Normally when I say “a light week” it means two games. Well, Portland took it to an extreme this week only playing one game against Tri-City. In the 7-1 victory Oliver did a very Oliver thing. As part of a six goal second period, Oliver scored two goals in a 38 second span. Starting off a faceoff, Paul Bittner took a shot with Eric Comrie stopping it but due to an odd bounce the puck went into the net with Oliver getting credit for the goal. Oliver’s second goal was a little more Oliveresque. Oliver skated into the zone going up to the blueline -with the nearest American being in Washington County (next county over) – and skated into the slot to fire a rocket that made it 3-1. In the win, Oliver was named second star.
Seth Ambroz, Mike Reilly-Minnesota Golden Gophers (Big 10) Season Stats SA: 28GP 9-9-18 +5 28PIM MR: 28GP 5-27-32 +18 42PIM It was Michigan-Minnesota at Marriucci last week. Friday night was a wild one while Saturday was a little more what you’d expect from these two storied programs. Friday night was a career night for Mike starting with the opening goal. Mike picked up an assist on Kyle Rau’s first of the night. The Gophers second goal was a Blue Jacket heavy goal as Mike fired the shot that Michigan’s goalie would stop but Seth, who was battling in front, almost swept the puck out but ended up sweeping it in to make it 2-0. Early in the second, Mike struck for his first goal since early January when he took a pass from Justin Kloos and fired a bomb to make it 4-1. To close out the night, Mike started the play that would send Kyle Rau off for Mike’s fourth point of the night and Rau’s second of the night on way to his hat trick. Mike was named second star in the win. Here are his postgame comments.
Saturday was a tighter game. Early in the first, Leon Bristedt gathered a loose puck in the corner and found Seth fresh off a line change who fired a shot to make it 1-0 in a 2-0 victory. Here are Seth’s postgame comments on the game. Next week should be a good one as the Gophers travel to “Hockey Valley” for a matchup with the third place Nittany Lions.
Daniel Zaar-Lulea (SHL-Sweden) Season Stats 47GP 9-15-24 -7 16PIM Daniel had one of his better weeks lately –he picked up multiple points in two of his three games this week. Starting off against Linkoping, Daniel opened the scoring when he picked up a rebound in the slot and fired to make it 1-0. After two Lions goals, Daniel struck again when, off a faceoff, he gotthe puck from Per Ledin and fired a missile to make it 2-2 in a 4-3 Lulea victory. After going without a point against Selleftea AIK, Daniel was back on the scoresheet against Leksands. He helped open the scoring when he fired a shot with a player battling in front who sent thepuck to a wide open Lucas Wallmark to make it 1-0. Midway through the third, Daniel did what he does – firing a rocket from the circle to make it 4-1.
Joonas Korpisalo-Ilves (Liiga-Finland) Season Stats 32GP 15-11-3 2.23GAA .922Sv% 2SO Joonas opened the week by taking a 3-2 loss to JYP in which he made 22 saves. Up next against Assat, Joonas made 38 saves in a 3-2 victory. Closing out the week with a rough one – Joonas would play the whole game in a 6-0 loss making 27 saves in the game.
That’s it for the week! Check in next week when we’ll be back to keep you up to date with all the Jackets prospects’ action.
