What They’re Saying About Luis Tiant

Should-be Hall of Famer Luis Tiant was on the shortlist to join Tommy John as part of The Hall of Very Good’s inaugural class two years ago, so including him this year was a no-brainer.

Getting people to talk about his induction was even easier.

Cardboard Gods author Josh Wilker:  “Luis Tiant was among the best pitchers of his time (the Hall of Fame comparison that comes up a lot is to Catfish Hunter; Tiant’s numbers are at least as good), an astoundingly good big-game pitcher, and one of the best entertainers the game has ever known. He’s got a big heart too. If you’ve never seen the documentary of him returning to Cuba for the first time in several decades, I highly recommend it. Brought tears to my eyes.”

Markus Heinsohn, lead developer for Out of the Park Developments:  “As a Red Sox fan, I have always appreciated what Luis Tiant did for that team during the 1970s. While his stats may not be Hall of Fame worthy, he certainly deserves a place in The Hall of Very Good, and I’m happy to see him inducted.”

Baseball Bloggers Alliance President Dan Shoptaw:  “Luis Tiant is, if nothing else, a quality inductee for the very fact that fans that saw him can still picture his distinct windup.  His personality, combined, of course, with some very quality results, make him perfect for The Hall of Very Good.”

Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy:  “Simply stated, Luis Tiant should be in Cooperstown.”
