Giants Fans Look to Fund Barry Bonds Statue

durantula

Like it or not…a Barry Bonds statue might very well be on its way to the sidewalks outside AT&T Park in San Francisco.  That is, of course, if a group of enterprising Giants fans have their way.

Introducing “Barry Bronze”, a grassroots initiative to help raise the $60,000 necessary to commission an eight-foot-tall statue of Bonds and deliver it to the team the home run king called home from 1993-2007.  And how does Hayden Simmons, the guy who came up with this brainchild, plan on funding the project?

Yup, you guessed it…crowd funding.

“It started out with some Bonds fans chatting about how deserving he was of a statue, and that we wished we could help but didn’t know how,” Simmons confessed over on the Kickstarter page. “Soon the idea of a Kickstarter campaign came up, and we did some research — turns out similar campaigns have succeeded in the past. For example, the people of Detroit raised over $67K to build a statue of Robocop via Kickstarter.”

Sure, that RoboCop statue has yet to debut and a lot of people have strong feelings about Bonds, but, let’s pretend Simmons and Co. get the $60k they’re looking for (they’re currently halfway there), would the team even accept the statue…much less put it on display alongside existing statues Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepeda?

Why not?

All of this begs the question, however, what happens if Bonds himself donates the final chunk of change?  Now, if you’ll excuse me…I’ve got a statue to help fund.
