Derek Jeter has gotten the royal sendoff at each of the big league stadiums he’s visited so far this season. But Wednesday night in Arlington…it was Presidential.
After Texas Rangers legends Michael Young and Ivan Rodriguez presented Jeter with a $10,000 check to go toward his Turn 2 Foundation, the New York Yankees captain was surprised with a visit from the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush. The onetime Rangers owner gave Jeter a signed photo of the two of them that was taken prior to Game 3 of the 2001 World Series.
“I had heard he was coming to the stadium, but I didn’t know he was going on the field,” Jeter said. “That’s a pretty special feeling, when you have a President come out and give you something to honor you. That’s definitely a memory I’ll have for a long time. I’ll be able to brag to a lot of different people.”
Sure, he also got the customary “you’re in Texas…now take some ugly boots home with you” boots, too, but a visit from the President and an autographed photo has to trump that every time, right?
