Back in August, the Cleveland Indians decided to put their rugged masculinity on display…and it seems to have paid off.
Thursday, the team’s superbly follicled pitching staff was named a finalist for the 2014 Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year. Led by Corey Kluber, the Tribe was widely accepted around baseball as, according to The American Mustache Institute, the game’s “most mustache-friendly clubhouse.”
“Cleveland has had a brave and good-looking dynasty of lip sweaters that have made it a proud city,” Dr. Aaron Perlut, former chairman of the American Mustache Institute, said about the team’s late season mustache revival. “We are deeply grateful and even more proud of the unimaginable strength and good looks of, not only the greater Cleveland community, but the Indians ballclub.”
And probably the most impressive of the lower nose gardens…the spectacular Fu Manchu of T.J. House.
“I’m really surprised, myself, because I didn’t know this award was out there,” House said. “Also, I’m excited to see all those good staches recognized. I think the staff should win the award because we brought good awareness to a great cause — raising awareness for the extinction of mustaches.”
Also nominated this year, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Murray City, Utah mayor Dan Snorr and the bombastic Milwaukee Brewers mascot Bernie the Brewer. Past winners include onetime Cleveland closer John Axford (2011) and former Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Clay Zavada (2009).
The Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year will be named October 25 in Richmond, Virgina.
