St. Louis Mayor to World: Don’t Hate Us!

Ask any St. Louis Cardinals fan who the best fans are in baseball and they’ll tell you.  They are.  There’s even a study out there that backs it up.

Ask any St. Louis Cardinals fan who the most hated team is in baseball and they’ll likely give you 29 different answers.  Unfortunately, according to The Wall Street Journal, they’d all be wrong.

Heading into this year’s postseason, the ten playoff teams were stacked up, head-to-head in a variety of different categories to see who was the worst.  Those categories you ask?  Number of players suspended for PEDs, payroll figures, recent successes (for some reason) and, of things…”excessive beards”.  And when the numbers were totaled, the Cards edged out the Los Angeles Dodgers 12.7-10.8.

Naturally, this had baseball’s self-professed “best fans” in an uproar and leading the charge…St. Louis mayor Francis G. Slay.

“The point is that we here in the Midwest are not a boastful people,” Slay continued. “We’re humble and quietly go about our business,” Slay wrote in a piece he penned for WSJ.  “Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful here in St. Louis.  But if you do, just know that we’re sorry. Go Cards!”

Now, I kind of agree with Slay’s point…to a point.  Why should a team be penalized for being successful?  They shouldn’t!  Penalized for having beards? Asinine.  But it’s the tone of his piece that, I think, speaks volumes as to why his beloved Cardinals grind the gears of baseball fans everywhere.

Seriously, read the thing.  Then vomit.
