It’s been a little more than two years since Ozzie Guillen has appeared in a big league dugout, but if the former Chicago White Sox and Miami Marlins skipper has his way, he’d be back…working alongside Joe Maddon.
“This is one guy I’d love to coach for,” Guillen told the Chicago Sun-Times. “He’s a very good baseball man. And he’s not a guy who’s going to be looking behind his back thinking I want to take his job.”
Maddon, however, is out of work, but…there’s this.
Amidst all silliness, I know this: #Cubs and Maddon have sincere, mutual interest. All are being deliberate and professional.

The Chicago Cubs? Really?!?
Sure…why not.
But, here’s the thing. The story here isn’t about whether or not the Cubs (who already have a manager under contract through 2016) are interested in Maddon, a two-time American League Manager of the Year, it’s this…this is, at the least, the fourth different job in the last year that Guillen has publicly pined for in the last twelve months.
First, it was these very same Cubs.
“All my kids ask me that, ‘Would you ever manage the Cubs if they asked?’” Guillen told CSN Chicago. “Hey, this is my business. This is my job. Of course I will. If I win in this town…I don’t know what they’re going to think about Michael (Jordan) and Oprah (Winfrey) and Phil Jackson.”
Then, just days later, he called the Detroit Tigers vacancy his “dream” job.
“My dream would be to manage the best, Miguel Cabrera,” Guillen told a fan Thursday night.
And, lastly, just this past summer, Guillen expressed his desire to return to the team he won the 2005 World Series with.
But, again, let’s not rule out the Cubs.
“I just make it very clear, if they want me as a coach, the only team I will coach is the Cubs,” Guillen once told the Chicago Tribune. “The reason is, I live there. I don’t have to move my family in and out.”
So, yeah, getting back to the most recent comments. Guillen might be saying he wants to work with Maddon, but, something tells me he’d answer the phone regardless who might be calling.
