Eagles hire Chiefs OC Doug Pederson as Head Coach

The Eagles coaching search feels like it has taken a year to complete after Jeff Luire claimed the team was getting a “head start” on the search. Every candidate it seemed the Eagles liked went somewhere else or dropped out of the battle. First it was Adam Gase, who I don’t believe the Eagles really wanted, being named head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Then Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, who looked like a done deal for the Eagles, stuck with the Giants to become their new head coach. To top it all off, former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin seemed to have the Eagles job in the bag, but he withdrew his name from consideration. This leads the Eagles to hire Chiefs offensive coordinator and Andy Reid acolyte Doug Pederson as their new head coach.

Pederson had spent time with the Eagles during the Any Reid era, first as offensive quality control coach then he was promoted to quarterbacks coach. Andy Reid took Pederson with him, when he left for Kansas City and they have made two playoff appearances. Pederson is one of the main reasons Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has been one of the more consistent quarterbacks in the NFL and Pederson could be just the head coach to get Sam Bradford to stay. In the NFL, you are not going anywhere without a quarterback and Doug Pederson can help Sam Bradford.

Once again Jeff Luire and the Eagles decided to hire an offensive-minded coach after their defense got worse this year. Both sides of the ball need a lot of work and Doug Pederson certainly has the tools to turn the offense around. We just have to hope the defensive coordinator the team hires is a damn good one. My thought on this is the hiring isn’t terrible and it could work. Let us know your thoughts on twitter @CPhillyC.
