The Red Sox hoped to be able to take the series with a win on Father’s Day yesterday. The Sox had rookie Brandon Workman on the mound vs. Corey Kluber for the Indians. Workman pitched well, but once again the Sox bats were cold. The Indians tied the game in the later innings and it went into extras. The Indians were able to win it in the 11th when Swisher hit a go ahead homerun.
Workman gave up a run in the 1st inning when Brantley hit a HR to right field. Sox 0-1. The Sox were able to get that run right back when Papi hit an RBI single to deep center, unfortunately he was also thrown out trying to stretch that into a double. Sox 1-1. Workman settled into his outing after the 1st and didn’t have another hiccup into much later in his outing when fatigue had to be playing a role. The Sox were able to take the lead in the 5th when Pedey hit an RBI sac grounder to score Bradley Jr. Sox 2-1.
Workman took the mound in the 7th and it looked like his arm was starting to get tired. Workman gave up a walk to Murphy and then a single to Santana that put Murphy at 3rd. Workman was done for the day and Badenhop was in the game. Yan Gomes hit a sac fly to score Murphy and the Indians tied the game up. Badenhop was able to get the outs he needed to get out of the inning without anymore damage. Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless 8th inning and then Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless 9th. The Sox had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and Brock Holt at the plate. Holt hit a ball into the infield and almost beat the throw to 1st base, but was called out and the Sox went to extra innings. Breslow pitched a scoreless 10th inning and handed the ball over to Tazawa in the 11th. Tazawa gave up the go ahead run when Nick Swisher hit a homerun to right field. Sox 2-3. The Sox bats weren’t able to get anything going against Indians closer Allen, so the Sox lose their 2nd game in a row and were only able to split the series.
