2015 Postseason: Couldn’t Have Been Worse For Cardinals Fans

9

Maybe you’ve been paying attention. Maybe you’ve been checked out for weeks. But the 2015 MLB season officially ended Sunday night/Monday morning.

The Kansas City Royals are your World Series champions.

Hard to believe that exactly 1 month ago today the Cardinals were putting a (rather unseemly) bow on a 100 win season and looking forward to the challenge of bringing St. Louis’ 12th championship back to the city.

So, uhhhh, no.

+++++

The Cardinals and Cubs – longtime ‘rivals’ – had their very first opportunity to go head-to-head in the playoffs. I think I speak for most Cardinals fans when I say this was AWESOME. You don’t get to see firsts in professional sports often. Even rarer are firsts that involve the Cards and Cubs.

After a GM1 NLDS win, everything looked good. Big brother was doing big brother things.

Then the Cubs hit 567 home runs over the next three games, including one that was encased on the top of a Wrigley Field scoreboard and the Cardinals season was over.

Worse, Cub fan now has ammunition. We live in a world where anyone dressed in blue can say ‘yeah, but we win when our games against each other really count’ and you or I can’t argue. These franchises now have a 4 game playoff history and the Cardinals sport a .250 win percentage.

Does it beat ‘1908’ as better smack? No. But it’s something.

Not good.

+++++

Unfortunately, the Cubs didn’t do much to make the Cardinals feel better in the NLCS.

Instead of going out and proving that the NL Central was the true fulcrum of MLB in 2015 with 3 tremendous teams battling for 1 NLCS berth, the Cubs got swept by the New York Mets.

The pond scum.

The NL Central didn’t win a single game in the 2015 postseason against a team that wasn’t in the NL Central. The Cubs mighty bats turned to wet noodles against the Mets young arms. And just over a week after dispatching the Cardinals with ease, the Cubs were out of the postseason themselves.

Not good.

+++++

Now Cardinals fans were left with a choice of rooting for the NY Mets or the KC Royals in the World Series.

Woof.

The Royals ended up winning and fans came out to show their support:

And now we are dealing with this:

Not good.

+++++

We haven’t even mentioned Jason Heyward and John Lackey’s free agency. Or how that NLDS GM2 might change Jaime Garcia’s stature with the team. Or Carlos Martinez’s rehab. Or Yadi’s thumb. Or any number of other things that the postseasons end put on our collective plate.

So, no. I don’t think anyone that roots for the Cardinals is particularly sad that we’re on to November.

The 2015 postseason…

Not good.
