Wisdom and Links: Bartolomania

“Now it is done. Now the story ends. And there is no way to tell it. The art of fiction is dead. Reality has strangled invention. Only the utterly impossible, the inexpressibly fantastic, can ever be plausible again.”

Those were words written by Red Smith in 1951 to describe Bobby Thomson’s “Shot Heard ‘Round The World”. They could also be used to describe the scene on Saturday when Bartolo Colon hit his first career home run at the ripe old age of 42, the oldest to ever hit their first dinger. And the world rejoiced.

It is remarkable, really, that we hold Bartolo Colon in such regard. He’s a perfectly good pitcher, but he’s a long way from his best days. He served a steroid suspension when he was with the Athletics. And he’s not even one of the better pitchers on his team! And while we all get a good kick out of his hitting, the fact is…he sucks at it.

But, he has now hit a home run! That means he has done something that we all dream of doing. Bartolo Colon has more home runs than you and me combined. He’d be one of the team leaders on the Braves!

Wow. What a world.

So, now that Bartolo Colon has hit a home run, what’s the next white whale for the baseball internet? I personally think it’s Bartolo Colon hitting a triple.

Until next time, this has been Dan Glickman.
