NBA’s Greatest Ugliest Games: February 7, 2009, Memphis Grizzlies vs. Toronto Raptors

“Puzzling.” – Matt Devlin, Raptors play by play

“Is this defense so good or is this offense this bad?” – Jack Armstrong, Raptors color commentator

“We played a beautiful ugly game. If this is a beauty contest, pigs should be in it, because it sure is dirty looking”– Lionel Hollins, Memphis Grizzlies coach

Synopsis: In either a highly defensive game or a really ugly offensive game, the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors shot an astounding 53-156 for a combined 34% shooting percentage. The Memphis Grizzlies held the Toronto Raptors to 29% shooting but even with the abismal shooting from the Raptors, the Grizzlies proved to be just as bad as the Raptors managed to stay in the game.

With the score 43-35 at halftime, it proved to be one of the most entertaining boring games of the season.

Last night’s game displayed some of the worst offensive performances from the Toronto Raptors starters:

Andrea Bargnani went 1-11
Anthony Parker shot 2-10
Jermaine O’Neal shot 2-9

In horrible performances from both teams, the highlight of the night was a performance from the Grizzlies Dancin’ Grannies

The only decent showing from the night was OJ Mayo who scored 12 points in the fourth quarter including a corner three to put the game out of reach for the Raps.

Key Notes:
Raps shot a horrible 29% for a season low 70 points
Jason Kapono hit 4 threes in the 4th quarter to help bring the Raptors within 2
Mike Conley led the Grizz with 15 pts, 6 boards and 8 assists
OJ Mayo had 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter
Chris Bosh sat this game out with a sprained right knee
Rudy Gay sat out this game with a hip flexor

Raps play the Wolves on Tuesday.
