One of the most courageous stories I have came across that has touched its way around New England, the young Patriots die hard fan known as Logan Schoenhardt, a 10 year old boy who has undergone many surgeries throughout his short life and has battled his way through illnesses, passed away Monday.
Schoenhardt has been a Patriots fan since birth, and from watching the E60 profile narrated by Tom Rinaldi, you get a glimpse of his dedication to the New England Patriots and what it meant to him. When Schoenhardt was three years old, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, which happened to be a “grapefruit” sized tumor in his skull, that only affects one out of every half a million people. The odds of this happening was staggering, and for his parents, it was a challenge ahead of them to help Logan heal.
After the first surgery was completed, many more followed in the coming years, as Logan endured chemotherapy treatments, radiation and brain operations. Throughout this journey though, his love for New England never faded away. The connection he has to quarterback Tom Brady is unbreakable and will live on through the family.
Last March, as Logan’s tumor operation was set, he had a request for the doctor who had performed the previous operations. He wanted the #12 of Brady’s jersey number engraved in his skull to forever show his passion for the five time Super Bowl champion quarterback. It’s a symbolic gesture that will forever stick with Logan beyond the grave.
That same month, Brady learned about the journey of Logan and sent him a video of him giving encouraging words to the youngster for whatever the future holds. The Schoenhardt family learned soon after that Logan’s tumor returned once again and this time, it appeared much more different in the x-rays. Doctors told the family they could not do anymore as this disease would most likely take Logan’s life.
Soon after being told of the news, Logan created a bucket list of what he wanted to do before he moves on. One important thing he addressed was to attend a Patriots game. This past December, against the Los Angeles Rams, the Schoenhardt family was standing on the turf cheering on New England, as they took down the Rams 26-10. Logan was fortunate enough to meet Brady, as they interacted for a short time and he was given a autographed football from the legendary quarterback and took photos.
A true fan that embraced life for as long as he could, I myself and T Town Sports hope the Schoenhardt family is in good spirits and we are sorry for the tragic loss of a beloved young boy that made a world a better place for the short time he was here. Rest in peace Logan.
