Ricky Fowler And Dustin Johnson Surprise at Erin Hills

Dustin Johnson was a favorite to contend for the U.S. Open Championship trophy going into the week, but after his performance today that doesn’t look likely. Johnson, the defending U.S. Open Champion, finished the day three over par, and is currently tied for 91st on the leaderboard. With a lot more golf to be played today we could see Johnson fall even further down the leaderboard.

Three over is not typically a terrible score for a U.S. Open course. Johnson actually played fairly well on the front nine shooting an even score. A few bogeys on the back nine is what has held him back. He has another full round to bounce back from today’s score before the first cut tomorrow. Although he has 18 more holes to avoid the cut, Johnson probably won’t catch up to the current leader, Ricky Fowler.

Fowler finished his day at seven under par with no bogeys. Many people expected Ricky Fowler to do well at the U.S. Open, but not many felt like he would be able to put together a performance that leads to a victory. It’s far too soon to say that Ricky will run away with this one. And we still can’t count out Johnson to formulate a comeback. A lot of golf still awaits us, and some of the sport’s greatest still haven’t finished their first round. One thing is for sure, the U.S. Open will not disappoint this year.
