The Red Sox had Clay Buchholz on the mound and hoped he would have a rebound start from his horrible outing last time verses the Yankees. Clay struggled in the first, but then really settled down along the stretch. The Red Sox offense went from almost being no hit, to having the lead and then heading into a marathon extra innings outing. The Sox would come up short when Albert Pujols hit a walk off HR, but the Sox fought the good fight for 19 innings.
Buchholz got in trouble early on by giving 2 run on an RBI double to Pujols. It didn’t look like a promising start, but it also showed that downside of not having Jackie Bradley Jr in centerfield. Both doubles to deep center probably would have been caught if JBJ was in center instead of Holt. Sox 0-2. The score stayed the same until the 7th inning as Buchholz really settled down, but on the other side Richards was still sporting a no hitter. Richards not only lost his no hitter bid, but the Sox took the lead. Pedroia hit a single to break up the no no, Ortiz hit an RBI double to score Pedey, Napoli got on by way of an error and Ortiz scored from 3rd and then the Sox took the lead when Xander Bogaerts hit an RBI sac fly. Sox 3-2.
Buchholz pitched a scoreless 7th and then went back out for the 8th inning. Buchholz had been pitching well, but in hindsight Farrell should have gone to the bullpen. Buchholz got one out, but then he allowed the Angels to tie the game when Mike Trout hit a solo HR. Sox 3-3. Buchholz finished the inning, but now he was no longer in line for the win. His pitching line was 120 pitches, 8 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB and 8 Ks.
The game would now be in the hands of the bullpens and would end up going until the 19th inning. The Sox took the lead in the top of the 14th when Ortiz hit a sac fly to score Pedroia, however the Angels were able to tie it up again when Mike Trout hit an RBI sac fielder’s choice off of Tazawa. Sox 4-4. The game kept trucking along and the Sox even got to put Heath Hembree into the game for the first time in a Sox uniform. Hembree pitched 4 scoreless innings and was able to keep the Sox in the game. Hembree handed the ball over to starting pitcher Brandon Workman in the top of the 19th. The Sox hoped he’d be able to go as long as they needed, but in the end he would only face one batter. Albert Pujols came to the plate and Workman would give up a leadoff walk off homerun to him. Farrell came out to have the play reviewed, but it was clearly a homerun and the Angels ended the marathon game with a celebration.
