Watching the Bills this past Thursday was like watching a completely different team from the Buffalo Bills that took the field two weeks ago against the Washington Redskins.
I remain cautious in regards to this team. The offensive line was intact for Thursday, but they didn’t look outstanding. The trio of Geoff Hangartner, Andy Levitre and Eric Wood gives me quite a bit of confidence in our line. However, the jury remains out on Cornell Green and whoever will be the revolving door at left tackle.
The defensive backfield remains talented and strong. But, I’m not sure how I feel about the rest of the defense. I’m chalking up the struggles on the change of scheme.
Either way, the offense looked great on Thursday. Not to mention, our starters beat the Colts’ starters 21-14 in the first half. We will see Saturday if the trend of improvement continues. We will also see if Terrell Owens gets booed or not. I don’t think he deserves to be. The Bills walked away from him this offseason and he wasn’t to blame for his numbers last year. The offensive struggles are more to blame than just Owens.
Nevertheless, Thursday did more for me than two weeks ago against the Redskins. Saturday will likely be our last great look at the starters, thus our last good look at what we may have to offer for the regular season.
I do know this. C.J. Spiller is an incredible talent and our defensive backfield will be strong – so long as they are injury free. It seems to me that our offensive line needs a little more time to gel and or front seven need to find their fit in the 3-4 scheme. If the right pieces fall into the right places I think the Bills will surprise some people. But remain cautiously optimistic, I don’t think anyone will be mistaking us for a Super Bowl contender just yet.
