Geoff Hangartner, Reggie Corner and Naaman Roosevelt headlined the cuts made by the Billstoday in order to reach the 53-man roster limit.
Here are the 27 players who have been cut: QB Levi Brown, FB Jehuu Caulcrick, WR Naaman Roosevelt, WR Kamar Aiken, TE Mike Caussin, OT Ed Wang, OT Jason Watkins, C Michael Switzer, DE Lionel Dotson, DE T.J. Langley, NT Michael Jasper, OLB Antonio Coleman, OLB Jammie Kirlew, ILB Brandon Hicks, CB Doyle Miller, S Sidney Glover, S Josh Nesbitt, LS Danny Aiken, WR Buster Davis, WR Felton Huggins, TE Shawn Nelson, OT Cordaro Howard, OG Mansfield Wrotto, C Geoff Hangartner, CB Reggie Corner, S Jon Corto.
Hangartner, Corner, Roosevelt and Jon Corto are probably the most surprising names that appear on this list. Ed Wang and Antonio Coleman and Mansfield Wrotto are also cuts from last year’s roster.
Of the players that made the team who are surprises, Colin Brown, Ruvell Martin and Robert Eddins. Now, Eddins was strong throughout camp and the preseason, but I thought he would be a practice squad player before making the active roster, particularly over Antonio Coleman. As for Brown, this may be the biggest surprise simply because he didn’t do much during his audition, perhaps that is a good thing for a lineman.
Buffalonians are going to be up in arms over Corto and Roosevelt getting cut, keep in mind that they are both former undrafted free agents are can easily be replaced. I’m mad that Corto was let go, he is a great special teams contributor and a good person. However, the new kickoff rules make it easier for teams to keep more talent, if you will, over players who serve specific roles. In a way the stupid ass kick off rule allows players who excel strictly on offense or defense to be kept around. In this case, Ruvell Martin can probably cover punts but will be far more effective in the passing game as a big target in the slot. That is why I am on board with that decision. Having boatloads of undrafted free agents on your roster isn’t a good thing. I have grown sick of all these players sticking around, at least the Bills went out and got a player with actual experience to compete for a spot. In the end, he made the team.
Cutting Hangartner really makes me think that the Bills are cutting corners in order to make as much money as possible. Hangartner can play center and guard and is pretty good at both positions. Now, in order to save a few million, the Bills have no back up center and kept a second-year player who has no NFL experience. I will say Brown is an absolute monster, if he turns out to be a player I will take back my comments.
While on the subject, I jumped on the Terrence McGee cut train real quick yesterday. I saw a few people indicate he was cut, including a Washington DC paper, and tried to get a post up as soon as possible. I was wrong, McGee is on the final roster and I am glad. He is too good to let go. As for Reggie Corner, he was always just average and if the Bills are as high on Justin Rogers as they seem, this move makes sense.
Now there will be a short period where teams can snag players off the waiver wire. Bills fans should pray that Michael Jasper makes it through to the practice squad. Other players who will likely get placed on the reserve roster: Levi Brown, Jehuu Caulcrick, Naaman Roosevelt, Kamar Aiken, Ed Wang, Antonio Coleman and Josh Nesbitt. Not all of those players will be moved to the practice squad, they are just the players I think have the best opportunity to be kept around by the Bills.
The Bills will likely scour the waiver wire for some help for their offensive line. Here’s hoping that one team’s trash is Buffalo’s treasure.
