Yesterday The Daily Beast posted a wide-ranging interview with the host of HBO’s Real Sports, Bryant Gumbel.
He touches on many subjects in the piece including – but not limited to – Donald Trump, 60 Minutes, Will Smith’s ‘Concussion’ movie, Mike Ditka, boxing, the NRA and much more.
One question, though, garnered an unexpected answer…
Who are the players, the athletes you like watching as a fan?
I like watching a lot of guys. Even though I can’t stand the St. Louis Cardinals, I love watching the second baseman [Kolten] Wong. I love watching him. I think the guy does so many things so well that I like watching him. I like watching almost anybody that’s really trying. I really do.
Huh.
Gumbel isn’t wrong here. Wong is a grinder. Happy he’s a Cardinal.
But out of all the athletes on the face of the Earth that Gumbel could of name checked with his response, I would have had Wong pretty far down the list.
Kolten should feel pretty good about the endorsement. The last time Bryant took an interest in the next big thing, it turned out OK.

I know. It’s not funny any more. None of us knew much about the Internet in 1994. He’s taken his lumps for this clip and we should let it die.
