I’m not fan of what Steve Kerr and Robert Sarver have done to my beloved Suns – chasing Mike D’Antoni and his mustache out of town, trading the indispensable Shawn Marion for Shaquille O’Neal. But I have to give them credit for the move they didn’t make today – that being not trading Amar’e Stoudemire.
I was all for the Suns trying to trade STAT. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t think he is a player that is going to lead you to the NBA title, so he isn’t deserving of a maximum level contract. And with the ball in his court as to opting out of his contract this summer, the Suns were wise to try to get some value for him rather than risk losing him for nothing in a few months. However, I wasn’t supportive of the team dumping a talent like him for whatever deal they could get. And the deals the Suns reportedly were offered were not good enough to make the trade. Plus, with the team in the hunt for home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, dumping Stoudemire would alienate their fans plus blow the team’s chances of winning a playoff series (which would putmore money in their coffers). Now the team can decide if they can sign Stoudemire to a reasonable contract extension or work on a sign and trade in the summer. Plus, with the way Stoudemire has been playing of late, coupled with Steve Nash’s resurgence this season, Phoenix really is a threat to get into at least the second round of the playoffs this spring. Regardless, they made the right decision for their franchise at this time.
Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don’t make.
