Happy days are here again: meaningful basketball games are finally starting up in North America! The NCAA hoops season tips off tonight, and while most of the top teams have cupcake opponentsdotting the early days of their schedule, there are still a few meaningful games taking place this week. Here is your NCAA Hoops Viewers Guide for the week of November 7th.
Game of the Week
Fri, Nov 11th: 7:00 pm ET – North Carolina vs Michigan State (neutral site game) – ESPN/ESPN3
This isn’t just your normal, run-of-the-mill early season neutral site game – the Tar Heels and the Spartans will be battling on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson (docked in San Diego Bay) on Veterans Day with President Obama in attendance. A temporary arena (complete with seating for 7,000) was constructed and shipped onto the deck of the Carl Vinson, which famously was the ship that Osama bin Laden’s body was taken out to sea in. A duplicate arena will also be put inside the ship’s hangar in case the weather doesn’t permit the game to be played outdoors.
As for the actual action on the court, North Carolina and Michigan State have a healthy little rivalry going as of late. However, Carolina is stacked this season and are universally considered the best team in the nation, while Michigan State isn’t quite so strong. Regardless, it should be a very good early test for Carolina and a memorable game for everyone who tunes in to it.
Other game worth watching
Fri, Nov 11th: 9:00 pm ET – Belmont at Duke – ESPNU
Does a team from the Atlantic Sun Conference really have a chance at beating Duke at Cameron Indoor? Probably not, but if any team from thatconference can do it, it would be Belmont, who is coming off a 30-5 2010/11 campaign and return four starters. A good test for the Dookies.
