2012 NBA Draft Profile: Dion Waiters

Dion Waiters
Syracuse – Sophomore (Born 1991)
Shooting Guard
6’4″ 221lbs

The Good:

– great scorer
– great in the open floor – real good at slashing to the hoop
– good playmaker/assist-man for a shooting guard
– takes good care of the ball
– great defender – grabs steals, aggressive, physical
– solid, strong build
– decent wingpsan (6’7.25″)

The Bad:

– a year older than other sophomores
– a bit undersized for a NBA shooting guard (one of the shortest 2-guards in this draft)
– could be a NBA tweener – stuck between positions on the court
– needs to work on his jumper
– takes bad shots
– has had character issues in the past
– has had struggles with his weight

NBA Comparison:

Rodney Stuckey, DeShawn Stevenson

The Skinny:

Apparently a team picking in the late lottery is enamored enough with Dion Waiters that he has gotten a promise to be picked (he has subsequently stopped working out for teams).  While he does have some red flags (tweener, character), he should at the very least become a very productive NBA defender.
