Book Review: Over Time: My Life as a Sportswriter

The title of Frank Deford’s recently released memoir, Over Time: My Life as a Sportswriter, is a misnomer – Deford isn’t just a sportswriter – he just may be the greatest sportswriter of our time.  Deford has done – and written about – it all in his 50 years as a chronicle of sports, most of it spent at Sports Illustrated.  And it’s all covered – elegantly, entertainingly – in Over Time.

For the basketball fans out there, the section of Over Time they will find the most interesting is when Deford chronicles his time covering the NBA for SI back when pro basketball was still considered “bush” and not big league.  From 1963-1970 Deford covered the sport for the magazine, back when the NBA schedule was created by one man, with no computer, sitting at his kitchen table.  Oh, how far we have come (for better and worse)

Over Time is a very fun read and will be inspiring to any budding sportswriters out there.
