Every night (well – perhaps not EVERY night) I’ll be firing up my NBA League Pass and scanning that night’s box scores to bring you, my beloved reader, what I learned from the NBA that night. Because the internet was invented for knee-jerk, totally premature, irrational reactions to things.
Knicks minus STAT
Is it any surprise that the Knicks are off to a 3-0 start with Amar’e Stoudemire out with an injury? No, probably not. The Amar’e-Carmelo Anthony marriage was doomed to begin with – the two just aren’t compatible players. If the Knicks plan on keeping their winning ways, when STAT comes back they better have Melo take a sabbatical.
He’s Still in the NBA?!
Despite having no discernible talent other than being able to score inefficiently by taking horrible shots, Nick Young is still gainfully employed in the NBA. In fact, Philadelphia will voluntarily pay him $5.6 million this year. He’s rewarding them by shooing 26.5% (!!) from the field so far. But don’t worry – that hasn’t persuaded him to shoot less – he’s taking over 11 chucks a game.
Breakout Player of the Year?
The Mavs have no business being 4-0 this season with Dirk Nowitzki on the shelf. But, after last night, that is their record. And they can thank one man for that – Ovington J’Anthony Mayo – aka O.J. Mayo. The early choice for Breakout Player of the Year (an award I just made up), Mayo is shooting a scorching 18-27 from three-point range thus far.
Must Be A Texas Thing
The Mavericks’ Texas counterpart, the Spurs, are also 4-0 after last night’s win, and Tim Duncan looks like he found the fountain of youth in the offseason. 19.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg, 1.3 spg, 2.5 bpg is a very Duncan-esque line.

Waiters & Irving
We’ve been hyping up the Jeremy Lin–James Harden backcourt as the most explosive in the league, but the boys in Cleveland might have something to say about that before the season is done. The Cavs young backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters are put up a combined average of 40.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 8.0 apg, 2.3 spg. Not on the Rockets level quite yet, but still very impressive nonetheless.

Remember when Lamar Odom was a reliable, decent NBA player? Ya, me too.
