Bah, Humbug

The odd men out

It's the most exciting weekend of the NBA season, right?  By the fuss everyone makes over NBA All-Star Weekend every year, it sure seems like it must be the NBA's crown jewel.  But to me it is much ado about nothing.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I hate the NBA All-Star Game.  The dunk and three-point contest are alright, I guess (and with James White in the dunk festivities this year I'm going to have to check it out), but the actual game (and I use the word 'game' loosely) is one of the worst things you could possibly watch and a horrible representation of the sport.  Preseason NBA games are more compelling.  Most exhibition games are probably more competitive and interesting.

The concept, on paper, sounds fantastic – round up the best 30 or so basketball players in the world and have them play each other.  But, in reality, the game is total garbage.  A bunch of guys standing around watching each other get wide open dunks and three-pointers.  Sure, Gregg Popovich and LeBron claim that the game gets competitive in the fourth quarter, but by then the score is 2,000-1,998.  What about the other three quarters?  Why can't they be competitive, too?  Why can players muster the energy for offense, but not defense?  Where is this incredible competitiveness that most of these guys possess?  Where is the personal pride, the "I'm not letting this guy score on me" mentality?  The guys just want to go out there and have fun and put on a show, you argue.  Guess what's fun?  Winning and competing, that's what.

So go and enjoy your NBA All-Star Game, suckers.  To you, I say "bah, humbug".

P.S. – I care so little for the All-Star Game that I really don't care enough to hate it as much as the above essay might portray.
