This move could be to clear space for Cory Luebke on the 25-man roster as he has been extremely impressive so far this spring. It’s likely the Pirates prefer Luebke as the second lefty out of the bullpen.
O’Flaherty was signed to a minor league deal on February 11, 2016 and this trade obviously signifies that he wasn’t likely to make the team out of Spring Training.
O’Flaherty played for the Braves from 2009 until 2013 and saw his best success with the organization. In those five seasons O’Flaherty put up a 1.99ERA, a 3.16FIP and a 1.155WHIP. Since leaving the Braves prior to the 2014 season, O’Flaherty has struggled to find consistent big league success with the Oakland Athletics and most recently the New York Mets.
