Pittsburgh Pirates part with seven in latest 2016 cuts

With Opening Day less than a week away, the Pittsburgh Pirates continue to pare down their roster.

As multiple outlets have reported, the Pittsburgh Pirates today have released or reassigned seven players, further trimming their Bradenton personnel.

Of these seven, the notable names include Rob Scahill, Trey Haley and Jake Goebbert.

Scahill has seen considerable major league experience, with 69 appearances over the past three years. With a crowded bullpen that will very likely include Ryan Vogelsong or Jeff Locke, Scahill’s presence in the relief picture was murky at best. In Haley, the Pirates took a chance on a hard-throwing career minor league reliever. A poor spring – Haley could only muster a 7.04 ERA in three appearances – coupled with far better options conspired to keep Haley in the minors for the ninth consecutive season.

Goebbert is an interesting case, as he was an early signing designed to address the team’s 1B void left by the departure of Pedro Alvarez. Since his signing, the Pirates brought in John Jaso and indicated that David Freese will also see time at first base. Combined with the presence of Michael Morse and the fringe 1B potential of Jason Rogers, Goebbert’s inexperience at the major league level clearly spelled out Indianapolis as his likely destination point.
