Pittsburgh Pirates Wake-Up Call – Taking Care of Business

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates finished off the Braves last night, taking three of four from them in the series, as they should have. The offense continued to surge, putting up eight runs and notching 11 hits, mostly spread throughout the order. John Jaso went 3-4 and is back to batting above .300. Gregory Polanco had two hits, including a two-run home run. He’s done everything well at the plate this year, and is arguably the Pirates’ offensive MVP so far. Jordy Mercer also quietly went 3-4, as he rebounds from a mini-slump that he was in.

Jeff Locke had a quality outing, but just remember that he faced the Braves. This line as just about the best you can expect from Locke – seven innings, two runs, six strikeouts, and six walks. He’s battling with Juan Nicasio at the moment to decide who will be the first one out of the rotation when the prospects come up.

Wilfredo Boscan made his major league debut last night, and gave a solid effort. He pitched two scoreless innings, and while he didn’t look good in spring training, he currently has a 2.48 ERA in Indianapolis. He’s just been overshadowed by the great prospects also in that rotation.

The Pirates did a good job of capitalizing on a bad team. This weekend they face the Rockies at home, and while the Rockies have done better than expected so far this year, they’re still not a very good team. The Pirates should hope to take two out of three from them to try to keep pace with the Cubs.
