In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies yesterday 6-3, thereby taking the three game slate 2-1. The win also gives the pirates a 5-2 record on their 10-game homestand thus far. Going into the home stretch, it was imperative for the team to stack as many wins as possible against very beatable opponents. The club has done just that, and will next go up against an Arizona Diamondbacks team that is 4-2 in their last six. Prior to that, the snakes had lost five in a row. Beset by injuries, the Diamondbacks have remained more competitive than many had thought.
Who can? Boscan.
Forgive the pun, but Wilfredo Boscan had a day to remember in yesterday’s outing. Picking up for Ryan Vogelsong, Boscan pitched admirably. Picking up his first career win via a four inning, two-run outing, Boscan showed great versatility. Having served primarily as a starter in Triple-A Indianapolis, Boscan has shown that he can adapt to various relief situations, and perhaps even make a spot start if necessary. For good measure, Boscan also picked up his first major league hit and RBI.

There is baseball, and then there is life
By now, you have probably seen Vogelsong being carted off and taken to the hospital after taking a pitch to the head.
To me, it was a grisly reminder – but perhaps a needed one – that baseball is a game, and these players are actual people with lives and families. Too often, fans will forget that. It’s unfortunate that much of the reaction after the incident veered into the realm of comments on Vogelsong’s on-field performance, as if that could be remotely relevant to a man who is likely facing a serious injury.
I can only hope that the next time something like this happens – and there will unfortunately be a next time – baseball observers, fans, writers and others keep the right perspective.
Pirates Breakdown sends best wishes and thoughts to the entire Vogelsong family.
