Pittsburgh Pirates Wake-Up Call – Keep It Rolling

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pittsburgh Pirates went up against the Philadelphia Phillies as well as mother nature yesterday. After a healthy soaking, the Pirates took care of business and put away the Phillies, winning the series as well. The win pushed them to 51-47, two games back of the second NL Wild Card.

The win was the team’s fifth in its last seven games. While they have won back-to-back series against the Milwaukee Brewers and Phillies, the feeling that the team could have done more persists. Perhaps it is the result of being dominated by one Zach Eflin on Friday night, but if the Pirates are to make a serious push for postseason play, they must dominate the also-rans of the National League.

Keep it rolling

Still, the Pittsburgh Pirates have won two straight series, and they look to keep it rolling against the Seattle Mariners tomorrow night. After two games against the NL West stalwarts, the team hits the road for a slate of very winnable games. A six-game roadtrip against the Brewers and Atlanta Braves follows, before the team comes right back home for six against the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds.

It could be fair to wonder if the team’s performance in this upcoming stretch will truly determine their postseason chances. As the calendar turns to August, the club must begin gaining ground at a more rapid rate than they have to this point. This favorable stretch could not come at a better time.
