In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates
That could have gone better
Last night the Pittsburgh Pirates lost 5-2 to the Atlanta Braves, officially losing the series. The Pirates didn’t just lose a series to the lowly Braves, they were horribly outplayed in the last two games.
Ryan Vogelsong pitched better than probably anyone expected. He went six innings, allowed one run on three hits and struck out six. Despite the performance, the Pirates’ offense couldn’t muster much against the Braves’ pitching staff. Tyrell Jenkins pitched well for the Braves as he allowed one run on three hits in six innings of work.
The Braves’ bullpen also managed to shut the Pirates down as it allowed one run in three innings. It was not a good night for the offense.
Last night’s Player of the Game poll featured a lopsided result as Ryan Vogelsong easily was the best player on the field last night:

Worst Road Trip since Tom Green’s movie
The Pirates finished up their road trip 1-5, following the series loss to the Braves. 1-5 against the Milwaukee Brewers and the Braves is about as bad as it gets. This team really needed to play better, especially following the controversial trade deadline. The team came out extremely flat and never really got into any consistent rhythm.
A good road trip wouldn’t negate the trade deadline, but it probably would have calmed down a large portion of the angry fan base. Following this disastrous trip, the anger is likely just beginning. I am usually the king of the optimists, but now, even I am frustrated. A controversial trade deadline is one thing, but getting outplayed by the Brewers and Braves is inexcusable. This team came out flat in nearly every game on the trip and they deserved the poor results.
How about a little hustle, Jaso?
A moment that is going to be talked about from last night was John Jaso grounding into a double play and never really leaving the batter’s box. He broke his bat and kind of froze. You could see the anger on Clint Hurdle‘s face and it was shared by plenty of people on Twitter.
In addition to the fans and the manager, Root Sports Analyst, Kent Tekulve shared in the anger:
That pretty much says it all. John Jaso has not played well recently and not leaving the box on a double play isn’t likely to buy him much favor with the fans, the media, or his manager.
