Pittsburgh Pirates Takeaways & Throwaways – Let’s Play Two

The Pittsburgh Pirates take advantage of weak pitching and lazy fielding to nab game two of a four-game series from the Cincinnati Reds 10-4.

After a one hour and two-minute rain delay, the Pittsburgh Pirates took the field at Great American Ballpark with a goal – stay alive. They did, and then some, taking the first game of the doubleheader from the Reds 10 – 4.

Takeaways

  • Bucs on the Board Early – thanks to singles from Andrew McCutchen and Francisco Cervelli, an error by Brandon Phillips and three walks by the Red’s Anthony DeSclafani, the Pirates went through the order in the first and took the field with a 4-0 lead.
  • Jameson Taillon gets his first career RBI on a single in the 5th to score Cervelli. Taillon is really becoming integrated into the team and getting that RBI is just another box checked, and a nice way for him to wind down his first season in the bigs.

Throwaways

  • Cockiness – that’s not the right word, but once they got a nice lead the Bucs seemed to relax in their intensity a bit, allowing the Reds to nab another run in the 6th. The way things have gone for this team, that’s a dangerous way to play.
  • Cervy getting hit on the inside of the knee in the 8th. With Chris Stewart on the 60-day DL, Erik Fryer and Jacob Stallings are the back ups. Anything happens to take another guy out and, with Elias Diaz also out for the season, I’m pretty sure they’ll be putting the gear on HK Kim next.

W – Jameson Taillon (4-4)
L – Anthony DeSclafani (8-4)
S – Wade LeBlanc 2

Line of the Day

So many candidates, but Francisco Cervelli is finally getting hot and his line in today’s afternoon affair shows it. In 4 at-bats, Cervy got a single and a double – 2 runs, 2 hits and 1 RBI.
