The Pittsburgh Pirates were 3-3 in their two series against the Brewers and Nationals last week, further distancing themselves from a postseason berth. Here are the four standout performances from the last six games as the team enters their final week of play.
Andrew McCutchen
Andrew McCutchen turned in another good week as he continues to heat up as the season comes to a close. He recorded two hits in four of the six games, including many for extra bases. In the last week he has raised his batting average five points and slugged his 24th home run of the season. Hopefully he’ll carry this into 2017 and return to his usual levels of production, because he is showing that he is still capable of producing.

While Sean Rodriguez did strike out a lot over the last week, he also added some very timely hits. He drove in three runs in the 4-1 win over the Brewers on September 21st, including his 18th home run of the season. He has been vital to the Pirates as the season winds down and resigning him if the price is right. His versatility in the field and offensive resurgence at the plate could drive his price up, however.

Chad Kuhl turned a great performance on September 21st, limiting the Brewers to just one run on five hits over six innings. He also only walked one and added six strikeouts to his season and career total. He is certainly making a strong case for a rotation spot next season, and he can further add to it with a strong start against the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

Jameson Taillon may not have registered a quality start his last time out and did not factor into the decision, but he still showed great control against the Nationals on September 23rd. He did not walk a batter and over his last four starts (21 innings), he sports a 18/2 K/BB ratio. Like Kuhl, Taillon’s next start will come against the best team in baseball, so he’ll face another tough opponent when he goes to the mound.
