Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – Cubs Roar Back

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates …& more.

Dastardly Cubs Roar Back

Pittsburgh Pirates fans will not like this, but the Chicago Cubs have come from a 2-1 series deficit in the NLCS. Now leading the series 3-2 after last night’s win, the Cubs can make their way to the World Series with just one more win.

The Cubs have shown some resiliency throughout this playoff run. Going back to the NLDS against the Giants, the North-Siders had to win several tough games in that series, including a 1-0 win in game one.

At one point, Chicago’s offense looked so stagnant, it was easy to see the Dodgers winning, perhaps in as little as five games. Now, it is hard to see the Dodgers roaring back and winning. Los Angeles does have one, well rather two, tricks up their sleeve. Due to some fantastic planning by manager Dave Roberts, they will have Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill hurling the next two games. They have more than a puncher’s chance, but might have to play two perfect games to do it.

Eric Wood Shows Well in AFL

Outfield prospect Eric Wood now leads the Arizona Fall League in hitting. Though five games and 21 at-bats, Wood has compiled a slashline of .429/.478/.429.

Yes, this is an extremely small sample. Yes, this is the Arizona Fall League. However, it is an encouraging sign for Wood. He has spent the past two seasons in Altoona, and though his play has been incrementally better year over year, there has been nothing to get overly excited about in regards to his progression.

While prospects such as Austin Meadows, Jose Osuna and the recent batch of “graduates” get the publicity, depth pieces such as Wood and Adam Frazier can truly help round out a club in spots.
