Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – The Empire Strikes Back

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a series

If game one of the World Series proved the Indians could compete with the Cubs, then game two was a harsh reminder of who the Cubs are. Chicago beat up on the Indians as they ran away with a 5-1 victory.

Jake Arrieta was exactly who he’s been for most of the last two seasons. He went 5.2 innings, allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts. He wasn’t as dominant as he could have been but he kept the Indians off the scoreboard. The three walks were a good indication that Arrieta didn’t have his best stuff but the win is what will matter to the Cubs and their fans.

Kyle Schwarber was the other hero for the Cubs. He went 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. The way he has played during this World Series is incredible. Schwarber has shown no signs of rust from missing nearly all of 2016.  You can see why the Cubs have been so reluctant to include him in any trades.

Bauer disappoints N’at

Trevor Bauer may never play with a drone again as the brutal injury has really altered his postseason. Bauer only managed to last 3.2 innings and once again the Indians’ bullpen had to pick up the slack. The results weren’t completely terrible as he did only allow two runs. However, he also allowed six hits and two walks. So the Cubs had plenty of baserunners early in the ballgame.

It wasn’t just the Indians’ pitching that stalled as the offense decided to take a night off as well. Mike Napoli and Jason Kipnis had three of the team’s four hits, which is never an ideal recipe for success. The Indians aren’t the first team that Jake Arrieta and the Cubs’ bullpen have shut down, so they shouldn’t feel overly discouraged. This is still anyone’s series and the Indians still have a real path to the World Series championship.
