In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Players are Confused but Interested
According to Rob Biertempfel of the Tribune-Review, the Pittsburgh Pirates are on the shortlist for Derek Holland. To be perfectly honest, this doesn’t really mean much. It basically boils down to player interested in having a job next season. Holland would be a logical fit for the Pirates as they have been known for their reclamation projects.
Holland is coming off a very poor 2016 season. He had a 4.95ERA with a 4.75FIP. He also allowed an insanely high WHIP of 1.407. Holland is only 30-years-old so he could be a good bounce back candidate but as of right now this is speculation.
Baseball Dead Zone
Baseball’s offseason can be exciting once it really gets going. Unfortunately, right now we are in the Dead Zone. The winter meetings haven’t happened yet, so there really aren’t any major signings or trades. From late November until the winter meetings the best you can hope is a lot of rumors and hearsay.
The Pirates are not usually a team that provides a lot offseason excitement and I don’t expect this year to be different. The team certainly has money to spend but this year’s crop of free agents is not great. Spending money is great but never spend for the sake of it. I am sure Neal Huntington will be creative and we could see some trades but I don’t think you’ll any major free agents pickups for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
