Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – Pleading the Fifth

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Fifth Starters Competition Heats Up

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the midst of a fairly successful Spring Training and winning is better than losing. We and many pundits have discussed at length the current competition between Tyler Glasnow, Trevor Williams, Steven Brault, and Drew Hutchison. To a lot of people, Glasnow’s bumps in the middle of Spring Training took him out of the competition, but his last three starts have put him right back in the middle. He has been filthy. Especially in his last start, where he struck out nine in four innings of work.

To a lot of people, Glasnow’s bumps in the middle of Spring Training took him out of the competition, but his last three starts have put him right back in the middle. He has been filthy. Especially in his last start, where he struck out nine in four innings of work. Glasnow is one of the Pirates’ top prospects, so to many, he should break camp with the team and take his spot in the rotation. Trevor Williams and Steven Brault seem to have a little bromance if social media is to be believed but they are both in direct competition for a job and that trumps love. Both have done their best to make the competition as interesting as possible. Williams has a 2.63ERA to Brault’s 3.45ERA

I don’t envy Neal Huntington right now because any of these men would make a great fifth starter and it’s easy to envision any of the three on the team. …wait there’s Drew Hutchison. He’s pitched terribly to a 7.41ERA and if he makes the team right out of camp, it’ll feel like purely for salary reasons and to justify the Francisco Liriano salary dump from last season.

So close to Opening Day

We here at Pirates Breakdown try to bring you consistently intelligent and interesting content and I feel like we succeed more often than not. This section of the Wake-Up Call is going to purely be fan service. Holy crap, we are so close to Opening Day. April 3rd is almost here. I know a lot of fans are frustrated with the Pirates for their offseason and I totally get that but no amount of negativity will kill my vibe. April 3rd, Fenway Park, it will be Pirates vs. Red Sox and I cannot wait to see the Pittsburgh Pirates back in action.

Then four days following that game, I will be at PNC Park for the Home Opener. Again, I don’t care if you’re the most cynical, “Cheap Nutting!!!” baseball fan there is, there is something magical about Opening Day and a Home Opener. For the moment, every team has a clean slate and you are all future and no past. It’s really my favorite time of the year.
