In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Opening Day is Special, but still just One of 162
A long, protracted Spring Training has finally come to a close, and the Pittsburgh Pirates will face the Boston Reds Sox today in game that will count.
Yes, Opening Day is here. To many – including your author – today is an unofficial holiday of sorts. Baseball is unique in that, despite having the highest number of games on the schedule of any sport – major or otherwise – it can still find days where the enthusiasm and love for the game rolls into optimism to form a special day.
But, those days are still just one game out of 162. So while you enjoy Opening Day – and you should – remember that this Pittsburgh Pirates team you see today may not be the same club you’ll see in a month. Or even a week.

Big Day For the Big Dog
Pittsburgh Pirates ace Gerrit Cole will start his first Opening Day for the club. While I will fully acknowledge that what I’m about to type is a complete contradiction to what I talked about above, this is a big day for Cole.
His 2016 season was a forgettable one. His 2015 season was easily the best in his career. In both cases, he failed to pitch into the sixth inning in his first start, so today’s end result may end up meaning nothing at all. What may be more important is how Cole looks. Sure, results and performance go hand in hand, but if Cole is locating his pitches and mixing his offerings well then all who are keeping a close eye on the Pirates’ number one should feel encouraged.
