Last night the Pittsburgh Pirates dropped game one of their series to the Nationals 8-4. Chad Kuhl never really got settled in as he allowed six runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. The Nationals have a very good offense and Kuhl never really gave the Pirates a chance in this game. However, despite the loss, Josh Harrison continued his stellar start to 2017. He went 2-5 with a home run, one RBI, and a run scored. He also evaded a tag at second base, reminding us that no one gets out of pickles better than Josh Harrison.
Adam Frazier also contributed two hits and has picked up right where he left off before his injury. Frazier is hitting .375 since being taken off the DL. For a team that has struggled to score runs, this can only be good news. If Frazier and Harrison can continue to produce at the top of the order, that should only mean good things for the Pirates. However, there is a minor (MAJOR) problem with this theory and that’s the current three-hitter.
Cutch Isn’t Happening
Andrew McCutchen went 0-4 last night, which brought his average down to .206 with a .670OPS. During the offseason when it was announced McCutchen was being moved out of center field, he made the claim he was going to have a “monster season.” I think it’s safe to assume, we are all still waiting to see the monster unleashed. Right now McCutchen is hitting like Sully from Monster’s Inc. When guys are hitting in front of you and you aren’t producing, it really becomes a huge problem. For most of the season, Frazier and Harrison have given McCutchen RBI opportunities, he just simply isn’t cashing them in.

Jung Ho Kang‘s VISA issues, Starling Marte‘s suspension, and several key injuries. However, despite the excuses, the struggles of Andrew McCutchen are the biggest reason for the team’s 16-23 record. The team is missing plenty of key contributors, but what the team is missing most is a productive Andrew McCutchen. Where have you gone, Cutch?
