In our Daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Throughout the last few games, Pittsburgh Pirates fans have witnessed something they haven’t seen much of in the first few months of the season: Andrew McCutchen swinging a hot bat.
A three-hit game – including a three-run home run – against the New York Mets Sunday was just the latest glimpse of stellar play McCutchen has shown over the last few games. In fact, Cutch has compiled at least one hit in nine of his last 10 games. While some may think it was the few days off Clint Hurdle gave the former National League Most Valuable Player, I think it may more so be the lowering of McCutchen down to the sixth spot in the Pirates batting order.
Since moving down to that sixth spot, the Pirates outfielder is hitting .387 with three home runs and eight RBIs. He has also walked seven times and struck out eight. While hitting in the third spot in the lineup for 45 games this season, Cutch hit just .200.
With his recent surge, McCutchen has raised his batting average from the depths of the unknown all the way up to .232. Now, he isn’t going to win any batting titles with that number, but progress is being made.
McCutchen has surely proven that you don’t have to be a one through five hitter to make an impact on the baseball diamond. Cutch hasn’t had to worry about pressure hitting at the top of the lineup and has clearly benefited from his move down to the six spot.
Can he maintain this pace that he is currently on? Only time will tell. However, it sure is nice to see him playing at the level he is expected to play at while helping the Pirates take home another series victory.
