Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – Crucial Divisional Matchups Await Bucs

In our Daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

After a nice day off Thursday, the Pittsburgh Pirates get back to work tonight.

And there is a lot of work to be done in the next handful of days.

Sitting in fourth place in the National League Central Division, the Pirates begin a three game weekend series with the Chicago Cubs tonight.

The Cubs, who sit at 32-33 this season, have had their fair share of struggles this season, one year after winning a World Series title.

Winning four of six against the Cubs this season, the Pirates have a good opportunity to repeat their success and gain some ground in the divisional race.

However, the string of central opponents don’t stop once the Cubs vacate PNC Park.

Starting Monday, the Pirates start their seven-game road trip with a four-game series against the division leading Milwaukee Brewers before traveling to St. Louis for a weekend matchup against the Cardinals.

Miller Park has always served as a house of horrors for the Bucs, who are 12-20 on the road this season, so it will be interesting to see how they do this time around.

When it comes to the Cardinals series, it’s hard to determine who would have the advantage.

St. Louis is just a half-game ahead of the Bucs in the division and have lost three in a row, but then again, the Pirates road woes have been key to their demise this year.

It’s no secret the NL Central isn’t what it used to be. While each team does possess an abundance of talent – especially the defending champs from the Windy City – the results just haven’t been there.

The Pirates have had a lackluster season, but they have been fortunate enough that they aren’t the only team enduring struggles.

They have a prime opportunity this week, not just to continue building momentum as the All-Star break draws closer and closer, but also to gain more ground in the ugly division that is the NL Central.
