FINAL: Pirates 7, Brewers 3
W –Chad Kuhl (2-6, 5.46ERA), L – Zach Davies (7-4, 5.40ERA)
Takeaways:
- CUTCH HAPPENS! Andrew McCutchen had himself a night as he went 3-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and three RBIs. He certainly looks like the old Andrew McCutchen as his current hot streak has brought his slash line up to a more than respectable .268/.343/.494/.837 with 14 home runs and 43 RBIs.
- Jordy Mercer had himself a game. He made several stellar defensive plays and raised his hit streak to 10 games. He finished the night 2-4 with a triple. Mercer is becoming quite the story as he brought his average up to .282. If Mercer continues this pace, he may find himself in Miami at The 2017 MLB All-Star Game.
- Jose Osuna capped a big first inning with a monster three-run home run.
- David Freese has an incredible defensive game. He made three barehanded plays and saved two runs in the process. Freese may not be exclusively known for his defense but tonight he was easily the best defender on the field for either team.
Throwaways:
- Chad Kuhl had a big lead but wasn’t very efficient and as a result, he only lasted five innings. Never good when you find yourself batting before getting a chance to even pitch in a ballgame. Kuhl wasn’t bad by any means, as he only allowed two runs in his five innings of work but he had a really good chance to pitch deep into this game and failed.
- Jose Osuna had a fairly terrible error at first base. He simply dropped a ball and while it wasn’t a super easy play, it’s certainly one he should make basically all of the time. It didn’t cost the Pirates but it did lead to extra pitches for an already taxed pitching staff.
- Josh Harrison was hit by a pitch twice in the ballgame. While this is obviously good in the sense it results in a baserunner for the Pirates, you don’t want to risk injury to perhaps the Pirates’ most consistent hitter this season.
The line of the Night:
This one is fairly obvious as it’s Andrew McCutchen. He went 3-3 with a walk, a home run, and two RBIs. He was absolutely outstanding for the Pirates once again. If you’re a Pirates’ fan, you have to be loving the way McCutchen is swinging the bat lately. Who knew a move down the sixth spot would be so beneficial for him and the Pirates?
