The Pittsburgh Pirates came out of the 2017 MLB Trade Deadline without significantly upgrading their roster
That is a bitter pill to swallow for a team that was within striking distance of the then NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers. Pirates’ GM Neal Huntington has often said that his team had been playing at a mediocre level, a fact readily apparent by the club’s lack of moves at the deadline.
It’s a nebulous spot, the corner this Pittsburgh Pirates team is in. The club has simply not played up to its talent level consistently in 2017, necessitating the strange grey area that resulted in Tony Watson being replaced with Joaquin Benoit.
That is an oversimplification of course, but the reality is that this is how the team’s inaction will be perceived.
The 2017 version of the trade deadline will be remembered as one of the stranger deadlines in Pittsburgh Pirates memory, and it serves as another reminder that 2017 may amount to a lost season.
