Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call: Taillon’s bounceback ability to be tested

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jameson Taillon‘s bounce back ability is going to be tested.

The 25 year-old has shown a remarkable resiliency in his career-to-date, overcoming Tommy John surgery, other maladies and of course the testicular cancer he was diagnosed with earlier this year.

No one is – nor should they ever – question his toughness, mental or physical.

However, Taillon’s start last night — his second straight with less than four innings pitched — was his second such “bad start” in a row, a rarity for Taillon. That in itself is strange, as throughout the 2017 season, Taillon has shown a great ability to get right back on track in starts immediately following those in which he gave up four runs or more.

There is a belief out there that Taillon is tipping his pitches. That remains to be seen, but one thing that has been seen is the bite on his pitches that has been Taillon’s calling card might be a bit lesser than we are used to seeing.

 

For now, we can easily chalk it up to the young Pittsburgh Pirates hurler going through some normal growing pains.

But when Billy Hamilton — he of 15 career home runs before last night — takes you deep, it may be time to sit up and pay attention to what is going on with Taillon.
