In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have been a bad base-running team for years now, despite repeated platitudes from manager Clint Hurdle. You’ve heard them all before, but here’s one from last night:
Hurdle: Diaz, Polanco outs are "unacceptable plays at this level. … They know that after the fact. You need to know that before the fact."
— Adam Berry (@adamdberry) September 19, 2017
This, after Gregory Polanco and Elias Diaz were both thrown out trying to stretch hits for extra bases. Polanco’s ended the game.
Hurdle continued.
"Part of this comes from young men trying way too hard because we’re not scoring runs, trying to do something they’re not capable of doing."
— Adam Berry (@adamdberry) September 19, 2017
While Hurdle is, of course, correct in his assessment as to why the issue keeps recurring, the fact is that it keeps recurring.
And that is understandably infuriating for Pittsburgh Pirates fans. The team has been piling up TOOTBLANs for years. Rick Sofield rightfully took most of the heat, but the club has not improved in his absence.
If you’re looking for answers here, I don’t have any. But I feel your anger. It’s kind of hard not to.
Fighting Apathy
The Pittsburgh Pirates at 10-25 in their last 35 games. Though their season was lost long ago, the team is now fighting against more than just their opponnents on the field.
A quick perusal of Twitter shows interest in the team waning by the day. Those that aren’t completely apathetic towards the club still have simmering anger towards the team.
I suppose that having anger is better than apathy, but a strong finish to the 2017 season may just help the Pittsburgh Pirates stave off some of the lassez faire attitude many have.
