In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pittsburgh Pirates fans are getting restless.
You can see that unrest with a quick look at Twitter at any given moment. Many wonder when the Pirates will make a significant off-season move, while many others debate back and forth over potential trade return packages.
The more this offseason drags out — with a new team seemingly interested in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ wares each day — the more I realize a simple truth. The returns the Pirates get for various trades would be better judged in their totality.
Meaning, a potential return package for, say, Gerrit Cole, may look unappealing on the surface. But with other packages for potential trades involving Andrew McCutchen and Josh Harrison, the forest may look better than the trees.
Every general manager in baseball would love nothing more than to get maximum value on each and every trade they make. But if the club is commuted to a rebuild — no matter the scale — then it is entirely fair to judge the totality of all of the hypothetical trades to judge the course of the team’s future.
