ESPN reported late Tuesday night that UCF is expected to hire former Stanford men’s basketball coach Johnny Dawkins to the same position, replacing Donnie Jones, who was relieved of his duties with the Knights 12 days ago.
In eight seasons with Stanford, Jones put together a 156-115 (.576 winning percentage) record and one NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013-14 that ended with a run to the Sweet 16. The Cardinal also participated in three NIT tournaments, claiming the championship in 2011-12 and 2014-15.
Dawkins played under legendary Duke coach Mike Kryzewski from 1982-1986, leaving the program as the Blue Devils’ all-time leading scorer with 2,556 points, until J.J. Redick broke the record in 2006. A first-round pick by the San Antonio Spurs in 1986, Dawkins spent nine years in the NBA with the Spurs, 76ers and Pistons.
Jones was fired after six years with the Knights, posting a 79-88 (.473) record with no NCAA tournament trips.
