Welcome back to Pirates Breakdown’s weekly Social Media Round-up – your one-stop shop for the week’s BEST posts by Pittsburgh Pirates Players, staff, media and more!
Baseball is back baby – and the Pittsburgh Pirates are currently rocking a perfect record! The boys in black and gold FINALLY played their first game of the season yesterday, after a rain out on Thursday.
My grandkids: Grandpaps what was your first opening day like?
Me: It got rained out now get out of my house you little bastards.#openingday #rainout

And it didn’t disappoint! It took the Bucs 13 innings to finally put the Detroit Tigers to bed, 13 – 10, but (triskaidekaphobia, anyone?) they dug deep and pulled out the win. The epic opener lasted a whopping 5 hours and 27 minutes according to MLB (how ’bout those pace of play rules, Mr. Manfred?) and didn’t paint starter Ivan Nova or closer Felipe Rivero in the best light. But, as Manager Clint Hurdle says, the guys will shower well and be ready to go again today at 1:10. One thing’s for sure, these guys showed a lot of fight.

Welcome Back Trevor!
Not only is the long national nightmare of the baseball off-season over, but also nearing an end is the similar painful social media absence of starter Trevor Williams.
Logging off of social media for Lent. I’ll leave you with an “unimpressed trevor throwing face”. Pray for me during this Lenten season (and always plz) 💘 AMDG pic.twitter.com/DYhSn2Tvj5

While everyone else is hoping the Easter Bunny brings them chocolate and jelly beans, I’m over here wishing for a Tweet or Insta pic. Twitter just isn’t the same without this guy’s music reccos, strange card role-playing game references, low-key trolling his wife and son (always with love) and off-the-wall promos for his IMHO podcast.
Who Was That Masked Man?
When baseball season officially starts in March, there can still be a nip in the air. Players were rocking some major layers under their unis to combat the 40-degree temps in Detroit on opening day. Felipe Rivero wore an interesting balaklava…

Apparently, he’s not the only one enjoying this trend…

In The News
If you purchased Pirates Guide 2018, first, THANKS! Secondly, you may have leafed through my article on the tradition of Glove Day through the eyes of Global Product Manager for Wilson Gloves Ryan Smith. Wilson created a short film of the event for each MLB club they serve. Check out their visit to Pirate City:
"I've been waiting on this day." The Wilson glove team hits @Pirates camp for #GloveDay. Check out the full version on our YouTube page: https://t.co/8RLCpAobBB pic.twitter.com/FESAzmaWjt

On Deck…
That’s it for our Social Media Round-up this week – catch us here every Saturday at noon.
MLB has established official hashtags for the season and the Pirates’ is a return to the traditional – #LetsGoBucs. Also, be sure to watch the Pirates’ social media feed as they are giving away all kinds of stuff to celebrate opening weekend.
The Pittsburgh Pirates take on the Detroit Tigers today at 1:10 p.m. from Comerica Park. Have a great weekend and #LetsGoBucs!
Finally
Because I believe in leaving on a high note, I’m going to end this piece with something uplifting each week. Today I didn’t have to look far. In celebration of the return of baseball to “the greatest city in the world,” the Pittsburgh Pirates’ amazing marketing team put this heart-stirring video together, narrated by the great Doc Emrick. If this doesn’t give you chills, check your pulse!
Pittsburgh, baseball is back. #OpeningDay #LetsGoBucs
