Small Market, Big Heart is a full-length documentary designed to share the compelling story of the people of Sacramento and their battle to acquire and preserve a professional sports franchise over the last 26 years. The film, set to be released in December, is a collaborative effort between leaders of the Here We Stay grassroots campaign and other fellow Sacramentans.
This project, spearheaded by Cowbell Kingdom’s own James Ham, has been in progress since mid-July. James first told me about the film a few months ago, probably during one of our lengthy conversations following a taping of the Cowbell Kingdom Podcast. My first impression? Great. From my own firsthand experience covering and watching the relocation saga unfold, I knew this was a story that would eventually be told in either a book or film.
Though James will not be a featured voice in the documentary, he easily could. He was on the frontlines for Here We Stay at City Council meetings. Before the word relocation even entered the dialogue, he was at every Kings home game and practice. James might’ve even played a part in convincing Oklahoma City Thunder owner and relocation chair Clay Bennett to give Sacramento one more chance at keeping the Kings.
I’m looking forward to its completion and release, which James says will be sometime before December 13th – the city’s next major deadline in the arena project. For more details visit the Small Market, Big Heart website.
